What cobalt leaching is

Tungsten carbide is hard grains held together by a metal binder, usually cobalt. When carbide is ground, the fresh surface sits in water-based coolant for hours, and many coolants slowly dissolve the cobalt out of it. The carbide grains at the surface lose their support. The tool looks fine, but the edge has a weakened layer, and it chips or wears early once it goes back into the cut.

The cobalt does not disappear either: it ends up dissolved in the coolant and on the operators' hands. Cobalt is a known skin sensitizer, so a coolant that leaches less is also a cleaner working environment around the grinder.

Signs your coolant is leaching cobalt

The coolant turns pink or reddish. Dissolved cobalt colours the fluid. It is the clearest sign there is.
Freshly ground edges chip early. The binder-depleted layer breaks away in the first minutes of cutting.
The ground surface looks dull or etched where it should be clean and bright.
Skin complaints among grinder operators. Take them seriously and check the coolant before anything else.

Why an ordinary coolant is not enough

General-purpose coolants are built for steel, cast iron and aluminum. Their chemistry is not designed around cobalt, and some of it actively dissolves it. A carbide grinding coolant is formulated so the fluid does its job — cooling, cleaning the wheel, carrying away the fine carbide swarf — without attacking the binder. That is the whole point of a separate product.

How to mix and check it

Mix SYN291CO at 4–6 % for grinding. Add the concentrate to the water while stirring, not the other way round. Check the concentration with a refractometer and multiply the Brix reading by 1.5: a reading of 3.5 means about 5 %. Top up with premixed coolant, not water; our coolant calculator does the arithmetic.

Keeping carbide grinding coolant in service

Filter fine. Carbide swarf is heavy and abrasive; left in the coolant it scratches parts and loads the wheel.
Keep grinding oil and hydraulic oil out of the tank — a synthetic coolant has nothing to hold tramp oil in suspension, so skim it off.
Watch the colour. If a clear coolant starts turning pink, it is time to find out why.
