How a boring head fits the bar

An anti-vibration boring bar is sold as a body. The cutting end is a separate head that screws onto a serrated coupling at the front of the bar, carries the insert and sets the minimum bore. Coolant runs through the bar and out through the head. Changing the head takes a few minutes and turns one bar into a roughing tool, a finishing tool or a back boring tool.

These are heads for lathe boring bars. They are not the adjustable offset boring heads used on milling machines.

The coupling size on the head has to match the bar. On bars larger than 40 mm, including the 2" bars, the 40 mm coupling sits off-centre, so the insert reaches past the bar diameter.

Which head for the job

CCMT, 95° — the general boring head. The 80° corner is strong, and the 95° lead lets the same head face the bottom of a blind bore.
DCMT, 93° — light cuts, finishing and profiling. The 55° point follows a shape — a step, a radius, a chamfer — where an 80° corner would rub.
DNMG, 93° — roughing on the 2" bars. A negative insert under a top clamp takes heavier cuts, and its double-sided design gives twice the edges per insert.
VNMG, 93° — profiling into tight contours with a 35° point. It needs a slightly larger bore than the other 40 mm heads.
Back boring — cuts on the pull-out stroke, to face the back of a shoulder or bore a recess behind a narrower entry, without turning the part around.

A smaller nose radius pushes the bar less sideways, so at full reach a 0.016" radius is safer than 0.031".
