A 1/2" mini boring bar for DCMT 21.5 inserts, right hand, with a 93° lead angle. The 55° insert point follows a profile — a stepped bore, a radius at the bottom of a hole, an entry chamfer — and the 1/2" carbide shank gives it reach: about three times stiffer than steel, it holds size where a steel 1/2" bar starts to chatter.

Inserts for this bar

Any DCMT 21.5 insert fits the seat, whatever the corner radius. The DCMT 21.51 HE3 semi-finish insert for steel, 0.016" radius, covers general boring and profiling. At full reach a smaller radius is safer, because it pushes the bar less sideways. For aluminum, a ground DCGT insert with a sharp edge cuts with less force.

DCMT or CCMT

Take the 55° insert when the bore has a shape to follow. For plain straight bores, the 1/2" bar for CCMT 21.5 inserts has the stronger 80° corner and enters smaller holes, from 0.512".

How far it reaches

Keep the stick-out within about six times the shank diameter — roughly 3" — for a clean bore. For profiled holes between 0.610" and 0.728", the 3/8" bar for the same insert fits where this one does not. For bores of 0.945" and up that need more than 3" of reach, an anti-vibration boring bar cuts at 10 times its diameter.

Clamping

Clamp the bar in a boring bar holder on the turret; a split sleeve adapts it to a holder with a larger bore. The ground flat goes under the clamping screw — it locks the rotation of the bar and keeps the insert on center height.
