A 3/8" mini boring bar for small bores on CNC lathes, right hand, with a 95° lead angle for CCMT 21.5 inserts. The carbide shank is about three times stiffer than steel, so the bar holds size and finish at stick-outs where a steel 3/8" bar already chatters.

Inserts for this bar

Any CCMT 21.5 insert fits the seat, whatever the corner radius. On a 3/8" bar the radius matters more than usual: a larger radius gives a stronger edge but pushes the bar harder sideways, and that is what starts chatter.

CCMT 21.50, HW2 finish, for steel — 0.008" radius, the lightest cut. The first choice for a finishing pass at a long stick-out.
CCMT 21.51, HE3 semi-finish, for steel — 0.016" radius, general boring.
CCMT 21.51, HW2 finish, for stainless steel — 0.016" radius.
CCMT 21.52, HE3 semi-finish, for steel — 0.031" radius, the strongest edge. Use it at a short stick-out only.

For aluminum, a ground CCGT insert with a sharp edge cuts with less force than any CCMT.

How far it reaches

Keep the stick-out within about six times the shank diameter — roughly 2.25" — for a clean bore. Beyond that, move up to the 1/2" bar for the same insert if the hole is 0.512" or larger. Anti-vibration bars start at 0.945" bores, so below that size a larger carbide bar is the only way to more reach.

Clamping

The bar mounts in a boring bar holder on the turret. In a holder with a larger bore, a split sleeve centres the 3/8" shank. Put the clamping screw on the ground flat: the flat sets the rotation of the bar, so the cutting edge sits on center height.
